SINAM Summer Research Program

The SINAM Summer Research Program provides undergraduates an opportunity to conduct research in the area of nano-manufacturing and nanotechnology. Students who participate in this program will be better prepared and motivated to pursue advanced degrees in engineering.  This summer research program is offered on three campuses University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); University of California, Berkeley (UCB); and Northwestern University in Chicago. 

 

Program features and benefits

·         Supervision by a UCLA, UCB, or Northwestern faculty member and postdoctoral fellow or advanced graduate student

·         Weekly roundtables to discuss research progress

·         Exposure to research laboratories at the participating campus

·         Seminars related to academic, personal, and professional growth

·         Social outings

·         Preparation of an abstract and poster presentation

·         Program stipend; UCLA ($5,000); UCB ($4,000); Northwestern ($3,700)

·         University housing if needed

·         Round trip travel expenses if needed

·         Meal allowance

·         GRE test preparation

 

*Please note that the Northwestern campus will only host a few students so some of the program features will not be offered (i.e. weekly roundtables, seminars, social outings, and GRE test preparation)

Applicant qualifications

·         US citizens, permanent residents only.  African American, Mexican American/ Latino, Native American, and women students are encouraged to apply.

·         Must have completed the sophomore year by June and be interested in pursuing an advanced degree in one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields.

·         Expect to receive undergraduate degree after May 2012.

·         Have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)

·         Must be available to participate in the program for 8 weeks.

·         Completed online application

·         Please note you can only apply for one campus (UCLA, UCB, or Northwestern)

·         Two recommendations: at least one from current faculty within or related to your fields of interest

·         Unofficial academic transcripts to be uploaded

·         Resume or CV

 

Application Process

  • Before you can submit an online application you MUST have a UCLA Logon ID. To obtain a UCLA Logon ID please visit: https://logon.ucla.edu/activate.php
  • (Non-UCLA students) You must click the box that states I do not have a UCLA Identification Number and I am NONE OF THE ABOVE.


After you have a UCLA Logon ID

  • Go to https://ccle.ucla.edu/course/view/SINAM_Summer_Research_Program?topic=1 and click on the "Login" link at top-right corner and login with your UCLA Logon ID
  • Click on "Enroll me in this course" in the right-hand column.
  • In the "Enrollment key:" box, enter the enrollment key 12345.
  • After you've enrolled successfully, it is time to begin your SINAM Summer Research application.
  • Complete the application. If you would like to modify the application later, use "save" instead of "submit" when you finish.
  • Upload your documents (Recommendations, Resume or CV, Unofficial Transcripts). You may add more or delete documents up until the deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions Section

When is the application deadline?
Applications are accepted from December 1, 2011 until March 1, 2012.  It is to your advantage to submit your application early to ensure all requirements arrive in time.

How do I apply?
Only online applications will be accepted.

I am an international student.  Can I apply to the SINAM Research Program?
International students are not eligible to apply.

When will I find out if I am accepted into the program?
Students who submit their applications before January 14th will be notified of their acceptance by March 1st.  Students who submit after January 14th will be notified of their acceptance by April 1.

How long do I have to accept an offer?
Once you are notified of admission into the SINAM Summer Research Program, you have one week to accept.

How are research advisors chosen?
On their applications, applicants identify three specific labs of interest. If admitted into the program, the admissions committee does its best to place interns in one of their top three choices, or in the closest area of research.

Is this program available for graduate students?
No.  The SINAM Summer Research Program is only available to junior and senior undergraduate students.

I am not a member of an underrepresented population in engineering.  May I still apply?
Yes. However, the program targets students who are members of groups underrepresented in engineering graduate education.
